What is hypnotherapy?

Hypnotherapy is simply a form of treatment done with hypnosis. In hypnosis, our attention is focused; it is a different state of consciousness between sleep and wakefulness. In our daily life, we experience hypnosis, trance, very often. On average, we go into trance for four or five hours. For example, when we give our attention to a subject, when we do not hear the sounds coming from outside, we are actually in trance. We experience these kinds of situations very often in daily life. The treatment done while in this state, in this different state of consciousness, is hypnotherapy. And actually it is a therapy of communicating with the unconscious, more commonly known as the subconscious, and changing the thought, emotion, behavior there. Especially changing the emotion. Because when the emotion changes, a real change actually happens. Hypnotherapy is used very widely in the world. In Turkey, it has also started to become widespread in recent years. Because by reaching the subconscious and providing change there, it strengthens the therapy even more. Simply, we have our conscious mind and our subconscious mind. Our conscious mind is a small part of our brain, about one percent. The subconscious is ninety-nine percent, and the two need to work together arm in arm. Like we use our two hands. The subconscious mind manages everything automatic in our life. Our hormones, our emotions, our behaviors, our automated habits, everything we do automatically, without thinking, like driving a car, we do all of these with the subconscious. And the most effective way to change these habits is actually to reach our subconscious and make a behavior, thought, emotion change there. In America, the American Medical Association has been teaching hypnotherapy to doctors and psychologists since nineteen fifty-eight. The British Medical Association, on the other hand, since nineteen fifty-three, to doctors and psychologists, um, teaches hypnotherapy to health professionals. In recent years, there have been very nice developments about this in our country as well. Thanks to this, as a psychotherapy method, hypnotherapy has become one of our best tools in therapies. It has become one of the most effective tools we use in our toolbox. With hypnotherapy, change, transformation becomes easier. When our conscious mind and our subconscious mind conflict, generally the subconscious wins the match. Even people who have received high education, received training, cannot perceive this very well. Because our conscious mind is already about one percent of the brain and ninety-nine percent is the subconscious. The person knows but cannot solve it. For example, the person knows that what they eat makes them gain weight. And they want to lose weight. But if the subconscious has learned that eating relaxes them when they get angry, when they get irritated, they keep eating and keep eating even when they are full. This actually stems from an emotional problem. Here, when we reach the subconscious with hypnotherapy and change the emotion here, and bring this into consciousness as well, in this way it becomes a real therapy. I love this saying of the famous psychologist Jung. He says, “Until you make the unconscious conscious, it will direct your life and you will call it fate.” Not only as our fate, actually it also comes out as illnesses, habits, things we cannot solve. By adding consciousness together with the subconscious, it becomes possible to make a healthier therapy, a more complete therapy.
