Negative Feelings and Thoughts About Sexuality Lie at the Root of Sexual Problems

In our country, vaginismus ranks among the top reasons why couples apply for sexual therapy. The main cause of vaginismus is negative suggestions instilled in women since childhood about sexuality and especially about the hymen. These negative suggestions settle in a woman’s mind from childhood and may cause her to greatly magnify sexual intercourse in her eyes. It is inevitable that a young girl who grows up hearing these things will later experience problems in her sexual life. Because vaginismus is actually the woman protecting and defending herself. In other words, negative and incorrect information about sexuality leads to negative feelings and thoughts. As a result of these, the person perceives sexual intercourse as dangerous. This causes involuntary contractions of the muscles in the body, especially the vaginal muscles. In other words, vaginismus is a defense mechanism.

What causes the vagina to contract is the negative feelings and thoughts about sexuality in the brain. In other words, the real problem is in the brain, not in the vagina… Because the pleasure taken from sexuality is entirely connected with our feelings and thoughts. If a person has negative feelings and thoughts about sexuality, it is also difficult for them to enjoy sexual intercourse. For healthy and happy sexuality, the person needs to concentrate and think only positively about sexuality and not have their mind occupied with other things. Not only vaginismus but almost all sexual dysfunctions may be based on negative feelings and thoughts the person has about themselves, their own body, their partner, or sexuality

While in vaginismus the cause is usually negative and incorrect information heard since childhood about sexual intercourse, in premature ejaculation the problem is the thought in the man’s mind at the beginning of every intercourse: “what if I ejaculate early”.

Negative suggestions placed in the man’s mind about masculinity and sexual power, such as “penile hardness is the symbol of manhood” and “a man should always be ready for sexual intercourse,” can cause erection problems. Likewise, a woman’s negative thoughts about herself and her own body and her inability to relax during intercourse can also lead to not being able to have an orgasm. As can be seen, the cause of most sexual problems is again negative thoughts in the brain.

Incorrect, exaggerated, and unrealistic beliefs about sexuality (sexual myths) also have a major effect on the emergence of sexual dysfunctions. In addition, the lack of sexual education in our country and the scarcity of correct and reliable sources to obtain sexual information cause sexual problems to increase day by day.
