Vaginismus is a condition in which, as a result of involuntary contractions of the vaginal muscles during sexual intercourse, the penis cannot enter the vagina at all or enters in a very painful way.
According to the latest scientific definition, exposure to at least one of the following conditions continuously or recurrently for 6 months is called vaginismus.
These are;
- Absence of vaginal intercourse
- Vaginal or pelvic pain during attempts at vaginal intercourse
- Marked fear or anxiety related to vaginal or pelvic pain or vaginal intercourse
- Marked tension or contractions in the pelvic floor muscles during attempts at vaginal intercourse

It is observed that women with vaginismus are unable to insert foreign objects such as tampons or suppositories into the vagina, cannot insert their fingers into the vagina, or feel pain and discomfort in such situations.
Some women with a vaginismus problem may also have difficulty undergoing a medical examination. Just as in intercourse, they may panic, close their legs, and even burst into tears.
Women with a vaginismus problem say that they love their spouses very much. They also have sexual desire toward their spouses. However, when the moment of intercourse comes after foreplay, a “panic attack-like situation” occurs in them. In this situation, they suddenly become agitated, tense their bodies with fear, their heartbeats accelerate, their breathing increases, and they withdraw themselves, close their legs, push their spouses away, and end the intercourse.
You Are Not Alone!
Vaginismus is a common problem and is seen in 1 out of every 10 women. Because it is a private issue, it is often hidden. Vaginismus is the most common reason among female sexual problems that brings couples to a physician.
